A Literary Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe’s â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death† Edgar Allan Poe is popularly known as a Gothic short story writer. He has produced many gruesome stories, including the short story â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death†. In this short tale, Prince Prospero decides to lock himself and his friends of the court into a magnificently decorated abbey to escape becoming ill of a disease which has caused half the people in his land to perish. The Prince provides indulgences and throws parties for months, meanwhile the rest of his subjects are dying due to the previously mentioned epidemic- the so called â€Å"Red Death†. Towards the fifth or sixth month that he and his court are safely locked away, Prospero holds a masquerade particularly in a hall composed of 7 different colored rooms haphazardly placed in a way unlike other rooms would be placed in a usual suite. In this even Prospero and company meet an infiltrated stranger macabrely dressed. It is the â€Å"Red Death! It came to claim the lives of Prospero and Company and at the very end succeeds. Although the story line alone is enough to make this tale quite frightful on its own, there are more elements that further make it a daunting read. This analysis will explore Poe’s unique use of dire diction and imagery and how it decorates and garnishes his juxtaposition and symbolism to get a theme about life and death across.
